Bird Spoon Figure Ivory Coast

The bird symbolism is related to the belief that birds are gaurdians of the sacred forests where young men go to be initiated. 

This collection of contemporary statues were made for Equatorial by Mamadou Sorho and his family. Each piece is hand carved using a small axe taking many patient hours or work.
